In 2026, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo marks its 170th anniversary. Founded in 1856 as the Orchestre du Nouveau Cercle des Étrangers, it gave its first concert on 14 December 1856 with fifteen musicians at the Maison de jeux — the building that would become the Monte Carlo Casino — under the direction of Alexandre Hermann. It became the Orchestre National de l'Opéra de Monte-Carlo in 1958 and adopted its current name in 1980.
Across that history, the orchestra has premiered works by composers including Massenet, Puccini, Ravel, Fauré and Poulenc, and been led by, or worked with, conductors including Toscanini, Furtwängler, Bernstein and Muti. It performs primarily at the Auditorium Rainier III and the Salle des Princes at the Grimaldi Forum.
The 2026-27 season opens a new chapter. Nathalie Stutzmann becomes the OPMC's Artistic and Musical Director on 1 September 2026 — the 19th to hold the role since 1856, and the first woman ever to do so. She succeeds Kazuki Yamada, and leads a season of nearly 50 concerts, operas, recitals, and film concerts running from September 2026 to July 2027.
