For the discerning golfer, the French Riviera is more than a destination — it is a way of playing. The most prestigious of them all sits just twelve minutes from our front gate.

And there is one course in particular — perched nine hundred metres above Monaco — that is impossible to forget the moment you step onto the first tee.

Monte-Carlo Golf Club — Golf Above the Mediterranean

Founded in 1911 by the Société des Bains de Mer at the urging of Monaco's British colony, the Monte-Carlo Golf Club is among the oldest and most storied courses on the Côte d'Azur. It is set in La Turbie, on the slopes of Mont Agel, more than nine hundred metres above the principality — a position that gives every round a panoramic backdrop few clubs in the world can rival.

The Willie Park Jr. layout is a par 71 of just over six thousand metres, with narrow fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and a Mediterranean wind that rewards precision over power. The clubhouse is reserved for members and green-fee players; the course itself remains open to visitors. From Villa Monaco, the drive up the winding D53 takes roughly twelve minutes — long enough to feel the air cool and thin, short enough to be on the practice green by mid-morning.

Few golf destinations in the world allow you to play with both the Mediterranean Sea and the skyline of Monaco unfolding beneath you.

A round framed by sea, sky and the Principality below

Among the rarities of the Monte-Carlo Golf Club is the view itself. From its higher fairways, the course gives way to a panorama that stretches from Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in the west to the Italian Riviera in the east, with the Principality glittering directly below and the Maritime Alps rising behind. Early-morning rounds are bathed in soft Mediterranean light; sunset games turn the fairways copper as the sea below begins to glow.

For many international visitors, this combination — mountain golf, sea views and Monaco's unmistakable silhouette — is what sets the Riviera apart from every other golfing region in Europe.

Royal Mougins — Riviera Luxury Near Cannes

Opened in 1993 and designed by the American architect Robert von Hagge, Royal Mougins Golf Resort sits in a secluded valley above Cannes, surrounded by olive terraces, century-old pines and the discreet villas of the arrière-pays. The course is a championship 18-hole, par-71 layout of just over six thousand metres — technical, beautifully maintained, and refined in the way only the western Côte d'Azur can be.

Royal Mougins is a private club that welcomes non-members under handicap conditions (32 for men, 28 for women), and its four-star resort hotel, Cinq Mondes spa and Mediterranean restaurant make it an ideal half-day excursion from Cap-d'Ail. It is also home to the Monaco–US Celebrity Golf Cup, played under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.

III · The Domaine
Terre Blanche — A Five-Star Provençal Domaine

Set deep in the Var, an hour west of Monaco, Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort is widely considered one of the finest golfing addresses in continental Europe. Two championship courses by the late Dave Thomas — Le Château (par 72, 7,235 yards) and the more private Le Riou — wind through three hundred hectares of cork oaks and Provençal hills above the medieval village of Tourrettes.

Le Château welcomes visitors with a handicap under 35; Le Riou is reserved for members and resort guests, and hosts the Terre Blanche Ladies Open. The Albatros Performance Centre, with biomechanics, custom fitting and Leadbetter coaching, is one of only a handful of European Tour Performance Institutes worldwide. For guests at Villa Monaco, Terre Blanche makes an exceptional full-day or overnight golf escape.

IV · The Event
The Princess of Monaco Cup

Monaco has long been a discreet capital of charity golf. The most celebrated of its tournaments is the Princess of Monaco Cup, organised under the aegis of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation. Held biennially since 2019, the latest edition took place on 15–16 September 2025 at the Monte-Carlo Golf Club and the Yacht Club de Monaco.

Eighteen teams of three play a Scramble format alongside professional golfers and celebrities, with the tournament closing on the iconic 19th hole on the Place du Casino — a floodlit fairway laid across Monte-Carlo's most photographed square. Funds support the Foundation's educational and water-safety initiatives. The next edition is expected in September 2027.

Throughout the summer, Royal Mougins additionally hosts the Monaco–US Celebrity Golf Cup under H.S.H. Prince Albert II's patronage — a further reminder that golf, on this stretch of coast, is woven inseparably into Riviera life.

V · When to Play
The Riviera Golf Calendar

Thanks to its Mediterranean microclimate, the Côte d'Azur is one of the rare European regions where golf is genuinely a year-round game. The most beautiful months — by light, temperature and the colour of the landscape — fall on either side of the high season.

A note worth keeping: in mid-summer, when temperatures along the coast climb toward the low thirties, the Monte-Carlo Golf Club's altitude usually keeps the course several degrees cooler — a quiet luxury for players who prefer their July rounds without the heat.
